Who would've thought the Democratic primary for Michigan’s Senate seat would be making this much noise? On the surface, it seems like two candidates fighting to represent this Midwestern state at the federal level, but what lies beneath the surface is what makes this one of the most talked-about elections the state has faced.

As of August 3rd, Abdul El-Sayed holds a noticeable lead over former House Representative Haley Stevens—a position many initially thought would be difficult for him to reach. But how did he get there? For many voters, it comes down to clear contrasts in strategy, funding, and messaging.

Haley Stevens has drawn attention this election for receiving over $40 million in PAC funding, including support from AIPAC. While her supporters see PAC backing as a sign of strong coalition-building, El-Sayed's campaign has used it as a major point of criticism, arguing that candidates should acknowledge the role such money plays. This contrast came up directly in a recent debate over ICE policy: when Stevens stated she supported reducing funding and reforming the agency, El-Sayed brought up her past votes in favor of ICE funding and praising its personnel. By pointing out the difference between her current debate stance and her past voting record, El-Sayed was able to present himself as a candidate focused on consistency, while putting pressure on Stevens to defend her record.

At the same time, El-Sayed has run a strictly grassroots campaign, relying on individual donors and refusing corporate PAC money. His foreign policy stance is another major driver for his voters. Many who support him point to his firm opposition to U.S. aid contributing to further destruction in Gaza as a primary reason for their vote.

For a significant segment of voters in Michigan, El-Sayed represents a broader movement toward progressive grassroots politics, drawing comparisons to political figures like Zohran Mamdani, who built momentum by challenging establishment front-runners. Despite heavy spending on attack ads against him, many of his supporters remain committed to his platform of systemic change.
